Archiving B Roll SOP

July 3, 2019 thomas

B roll that was filmed to create a demonstration video will need to be archived once it is no longer needed to free up space for new projects.

1. Move the b roll from the editing/media hard drive to an archive/backup hard drive.

2. Create a folder labeling exactly what kind of footage it is (Swimwear, Posture, Dress Codes, etc) before moving the footage.

3. Create a folder on the RMRS Google Drive and upload the footage there for additional backup, again carefully labeling what the type of footage is.

RMRS Google Drive

User: rmrs.cloud

Pass: Dr!v3f0rVIDS

4. Make sure the media has successfully been copied before deleting it off the editing/media drive.

5. Once the footage has been moved, double check any current projects to see if any of the moved b roll is being used. If so, re-link the media to the new location.

B Roll should be archived every two weeks if there are frequent videos coming in, once a month if there aren’t any new demonstration videos being filmed.… Read the rest

Video Editing SOP – Thomas

SOP – Video Creation – Thomas

Initial Cut – 1-2 hours

Download the raw footage from Antonio.

Create a 1080 24p sequence in Premiere Pro. Scale footage down 50% to match sequence settings. This will help if we need to zoom in later for closeups.

Line up camera audio and recorded audio, then mute or delete the camera audio.

Scan through footage, selecting the final takes. Typically it will be the last take of a particular section that will be the best.

Raw footage is typically 45min-1hr long, which ends up being 8-15min once final takes are selected.

Cut through footage again, cutting out tangents, tripping over words, overly long pauses, etc. Smooth it out so the audio is seamless, usually b roll will often be used to cover the cuts visually. If needed apply a cross fade to the audio to help smooth it.

Final cut should be 6-10 min long.

Any sponsored section should no more than 60-90 seconds. This can take the longest to cut, as the pitch is often 2-3 minutes initially. It’s important to hit the major talking points but still keep it concise. It should also appear within the first 2-3 minutes of the video.

Legally all sponsors have to be identified as such, do not edit out when Antonio mentions that the company is a sponsor.

Titles and B Roll – 3-7 hours

Add the 3 second RMRS intro to beginning of video.

Add the lower third for Antonio’s name within the first 15 seconds.

Add titles slides whenever Antonio introduces a new talking point/subject. Find images relevant to the talking point to be used in the background underneath the title. The images should be darkened and blurred to ensure the text stands out. Add animation to the titles for visual interest.

Add b roll footage, images, and infographics to further illustrate whatever points Antonio is discussing (what to look for in a suit, how to shave, the importance of exercise etc).

B roll footage comes from either footage Antonio has had filmed, Menfluential footage, b roll video I have shot myself, or the free site Pexels.

B roll images come primarily from Pexels and Unsplash. If they don’t have what is needed images can be taken from big name brand sources like Brooks Brothers or Suit Supply, with a filter effect added in photoshop.

Demonstration Video Filming SOP

March 22, 2019 thomas

1. Establish talking points so a rough shot list can be created.

2. If needed, buy additional clothing or props for the topic.

3. Determine the best shooting location, whether that’s against a photography backdrop or a particular type of room.

4. Set lighting for the scene, typically with a diffused key light and small rim light for background separation. Some locations may benefit from a diffused fill light.

5. Make sure the camera is set properly, with the desired frame rate (24 or 60), and resolution (4K or 1080p). Also set the correct color balance based on lighting, dynamic range profile, and exposure settings.

6. Check to make sure all clothing needed in the video is in good shape, iron or steam any wrinkles out before filming.

7. Film the necessary footage for each talking point, typically it requires 4-8 shots for each point. It’s better to film an extra 2-3 shots that you might not need vs having to reset and shoot again later.

8. Review footage after filming to make sure there weren’t any mistakes and check that the subject was in focus.

9. Ideally leave the filming equipment setup until the edit is complete in case re-shoots are needed, otherwise break down the set.

10. Decide whether to use voiceover narration or text to communicate the message in the video.

11. Write and send Antonio the voiceover script if needed, otherwise develop the text from the existing talking points.

12. Sort through all the clips, narrowing it down to the best footage, then organize the clips according to their corresponding points.

13. Build out the skeleton of the video using the narration or text, then line up the b roll clips accordingly.

14. Select background music.

15. Follow RMRS video editing SOP.… Read the rest

Video Creation Checklist

September 10, 2018 Tina

Changing Shots and B-roll .
It’s important to keep the visual flowing to prevent the video from getting stale. No clip, whether wide angle, close up, b roll, or image should last longer than 10 seconds, try to go between 3-9 seconds per shot. B roll and own infographic images are the ideal go to, but if they aren’t
relevant then you can use other images (free stock images) or to cut to a close up of Antonio instead.

Images.
First of all try to use our own images.
Images can be found at Pexels, Unsplash, and Stocksnap. These are free photos that can be used commercially, but are very high quality. We can also use pictures of clothing, ideally from major brands like Suit Supply, Brooks Brothers, J Crew, etc. These images need the face cropped out, and ideally some sort of slight blur or cartoon effect added so it won’t be a copy of the original image. Images are used to cover cuts in the video or whenever Antonio needs a point emphasized with an image. It’s important to add a subtle zoom in effect to add visual interest.

Copy and emphasis word points.
Copy is added to give emphasis to the major points Antonio makes in the video, especially list videos.
It is also used during the intro to communicate the video subject. The copy doesn’t have to follow
Antonio’s words exactly, as sometimes it needs to be condensed to be visually pleasing. Occasionally adding copy to the side is useful if Antonio made a very insightful or useful comment that would benefit from emphasis. This should be used sparingly, as it can bog down the editing process if overdone.

Audio.
Whenever the video has been shortened this can leave abrupt cuts in the audio, so a cross fade transition can be applied to smooth this over. If there is a drastic volume difference between clips it is also useful to adjust the volume to better match. Finally a multiband compressor should be added to the final audio with threshold set to -1 to give consistent audio levels.

Systemize the process. Try to systemize the process as much as possible, you can copy audio and color settings from an old video to a new video. If Antonio changes the setup (lighting, new room, etc.) then you have to make adjustments.
